Bonus Wagering Requirements, Explained

Most casino bonuses aren’t free money — they’re a contract. This guide explains wagering requirements in plain ringgit terms, so you know what a “100% up to RM500” offer actually costs you before you ever see a withdrawal.

TL;DR

  • Wagering requirement (WR) = how many times you must bet the bonus (and sometimes the deposit) before you can withdraw.
  • “35x bonus” on an RM100 bonus means you must wager RM3,500 before cashing out.
  • “35x (deposit + bonus)” is worse — on an RM100 + RM100, that’s 35 × RM200 = RM7,000 in turnover.
  • Game weighting matters: slots usually count 100%, live casino and table games often count 10% or 0%.
  • Lower WR = better. Anything over 40x deserves real scrutiny. Always check max bet, time limit, and max cashout too.

What a Wagering Requirement Actually Is

A wagering requirement (also called a “rollover” or “playthrough”) is the total amount you must bet before any winnings tied to a bonus become withdrawable. It exists because casinos don’t want players to take a bonus, win, and immediately cash out — that would cost them money. The WR is the condition attached to the “free” money.

It’s written as a multiplier: 35x, 40x, 20x, and so on. The number tells you how many times the relevant amount has to be wagered. The trick — and where most players get caught — is in what the multiplier applies to.

“Bonus Only” vs “Deposit + Bonus”

This single distinction changes the value of a bonus more than almost anything else. Read the fine print for which one applies.

35x bonus only

The multiplier applies to the bonus amount alone. If you deposit RM100 and get a RM100 bonus with 35x wagering:

  • Turnover required = 35 × RM100 (bonus) = RM3,500

35x deposit + bonus

The multiplier applies to your deposit and the bonus combined. Same RM100 + RM100, same 35x:

  • Turnover required = 35 × (RM100 + RM100) = 35 × RM200 = RM7,000

Same headline number (35x), double the actual cost. “Deposit + bonus” wagering is always more demanding than “bonus only.” When a casino advertises a low multiplier but applies it to deposit + bonus, the low number is doing marketing work.

Game Weighting: Why Your Bets May Not Count Fully

Not every RM1 you wager counts as RM1 toward the requirement. Casinos assign each game category a “weighting” — a percentage of how much your bet contributes. This protects them on low-house-edge games.

Typical weightings (always confirm on the specific offer):

  • Slots: usually 100% — RM1 bet = RM1 toward WR.
  • Live casino / baccarat / blackjack / roulette: often 10%, sometimes 0%. RM1 bet may count as just RM0.10.
  • Video poker, certain table games: commonly 10–20%.
  • Fishing / arcade games: varies widely; check per offer.

This is why a “live casino welcome bonus” can be misleading. If the bonus is for live casino but live games only count 10% toward wagering, clearing it on live tables takes ten times the turnover it would on slots. Read which games clear the bonus, not just which games the bonus is “for.”

The Other Terms That Quietly Limit a Bonus

Wagering is the headline, but four other conditions decide whether a bonus is actually claimable:

  • Max bet while wagering: Often capped at RM5–RM20 per spin/hand. Exceed it — even once — and the casino can void your bonus and winnings. This is one of the most common reasons withdrawals get refused.
  • Time limit: Bonuses usually expire in 7–30 days. A high WR with a short window can be mathematically impossible to clear without reckless betting.
  • Max cashout / win cap: Some bonuses cap how much you can withdraw from bonus winnings (e.g. “max withdrawal 5x bonus” or a flat RM amount). You can do everything right and still have winnings cut.
  • Excluded games & max stake on features: Certain high-volatility slots are barred during wagering, and some offers cap your bet during bonus buy or feature rounds.

A Worked Example

Say a casino offers “288% up to RM2,880, 35x bonus only, 30-day validity, max bet RM10, slots only.” You deposit RM1,000 and receive a RM2,880 bonus.

  • Wagering = 35 × RM2,880 = RM100,800 in total bets.
  • At RM10 max bet per spin, that’s 10,080 spins minimum.
  • You have 30 days, and only slots count.

None of this means the bonus is a scam — these numbers are normal for a large match bonus. The point is that “288% up to RM2,880” and “RM100,800 of slot turnover in 30 days” are the same sentence. Knowing that before you opt in is the entire game.

How To Evaluate Any Bonus In 30 Seconds

Run this checklist before claiming:

  • What’s the multiplier, and does it apply to bonus only or deposit + bonus?
  • Which games clear it, and at what weighting?
  • What’s the max bet during wagering? (The silent voider.)
  • How long do I have?
  • Is there a max cashout?

If you can’t find clear answers to all five, that’s information too. On PayoutCompass, we surface these specifics in every casino review’s bonus section — and our bonus type pages group casinos by the kind of offer they run, so you can compare like with like.

The Honest Bottom Line

A bonus is worth taking when the math works for how you actually play, and worth skipping when it doesn’t. A smaller bonus with low wagering and a high game weighting often beats a huge bonus with 45x deposit-plus-bonus terms and a 7-day clock. Bigger headline numbers are not better numbers.

If a bonus’s terms aren’t clearly stated, treat that as a reason for caution, not a detail to ignore. The terms are the product.
